Speech impairment: Quebecer Marie-Soleil Labelle knocks on NASCAR Series door

Diving into motorsport since the age of 12, an Outaouais pilot knocks on the door of the prestigious NASCAR series while pursuing university studies in mechanical engineering and computer technology, even though she has to deal with a language disorder (LD), formerly known as dysphasia.

At the start of her karting career for fun with her father, Marie-Soleil Labelle didn’t know she had a language disorder (LD). She received the diagnosis in 9th grade, which allowed her to get assistance. She also received a diagnosis of dyslexia.

«Before the diagnosis, I didn’t have the tools,» she recalls. «It wasn’t until I was 14 that I got the resources to help me. It’s to help people in my situation that I’m a spokesperson for the LD Quebec group. I want young people with the same disorder as me to believe in themselves and their dreams. Just because you have a small difference doesn’t mean you can’t achieve great things.»
